Luke 2:8-14 (NIV)

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Devotion

In the fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds were quietly going about their work when suddenly, the sky lit up with the glory of the Lord. Imagine the fear and awe that must have filled their hearts as they saw an angel appear before them with a message that would change the world. The angel’s first words were, “Do not be afraid,” a gentle reminder that while the appearance of God's glory was overwhelming, His message was one of peace and joy. The Savior had been born, and this was good news for all people.

The angel's announcement that a Savior, the Messiah, had been born in the town of David was a fulfillment of God's promises to Israel. The Savior had come, but not in the way people expected. He wasn’t born to royalty or power but to a humble family in a small town. The sign that would confirm this miraculous birth was simple yet profound—a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. This humble birth was the beginning of a story that would bring hope and salvation to all people.

As if the angel’s words weren’t enough, the heavens opened and a multitude of angels appeared, praising God and declaring peace on earth. This announcement of peace wasn’t just for a select few; it was for everyone. The birth of Jesus brought with it the promise of reconciliation, the possibility of peace with God and with one another. Through Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection, God offered peace to all who would receive it.

This Advent season, let us embrace the good news of great joy that the angels proclaimed. Jesus, the Savior of the world, came to bring peace, not only in the world but also to our hearts. As we reflect on the birth of Christ, may we also reflect on how we can share His peace with those around us. The good news is for all people, and it’s a message we are called to spread with joy.
